結局、お誘いの文句ですから、いろいろもって回った言い方をするものです。
Do you want to go~ だって、良いのだが、このような言い方もあると言うこと。
このような言葉は結構実際の英会話、というか生活に出てくるので、知らないと、何を言っているのか、分からない、と言うことになる。それで人は「英語が聞こえてこない。おれは英会話は分からない」と言う風に考えるのである。
学校英語である程度できる人なら、I was just wondering if you maybe wanted to go with me? を訳するのはまずは問題がないだろう。なかなか日本語にしづらいが、何を言っているのかは、理解できるだろう。でも、実際の英会話では絶対に聞こえてこない。
書いている英語なら理解できるのだが、会話では聞こえない、と言う風になる。
とすれば、このような言い方もするのだ、ということで、覚えてしまえば、きっと聞こえてくるだろう。
学校英語はそれなりに勉強してきた人で、英会話が分からない、という人もけっこう多いものだ。というか、そのような人が悩んでいる。そのような人は、このように発想の転換をする、英会話が分かってくると思う。
もっとくどく言うと、I was just wondering if you maybe wanted to go with me?
は訳することができるから、まずは良い。
話す時には、Do you want to go~ と言えば良い。
とすれば、ギャップがある。それを埋める。それが英会話上達のコツではないだろうか。
つまり、I was just wondering if you maybe wanted to go with me? という言い方もあるのだ、と認識し、それを覚える。暗記する。それでひとつ駒が進む。そのようなものだろう。
